Two schools in the Castaic Union School District will be under new leadership after members of the district board voted Thursday night to appoint a new principal for Castaic Middle School and an interim principal at Northlake Hills Elementary School.

Taking over at Castaic Middle School is Robert Brauneisen, who has served for the last eight years as the principal of Northlake Hills Elementary School, another school in the Castaic district, according to district Superintendent Jim Gibson.

Brauneisen replaces Ellen Edeburn, who is leaving her position at Castaic Middle School to take over as the director of curriculum and instruction for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

He will start his new job Oct. 1, Gibson said.

Brauneisen began his career as a sixth grade teacher and eventually held other administrative positions as a middle school assistant principal and director of instructional technology for the Glendale Unified School District.

To fill the void at Northlake Hills, members of the Castaic district board appointed Erin Augusta, a current fifth grade teacher and administrative designee at Northlake Hills, to serve as interim principal.

She will also take over that position Oct. 1, Gibson said.

Augusta has previous leadership experience in the district, having served as a summer school principal and professional development provider.

She is also involved in the district’s effort to design and deliver staff development related to the California Common Core Standards, which are set to be implemented in the next few years.

Common Core is a set of uniform metrics meant to standardize curriculum state to state. The standards place a greater emphasis on teaching core concepts, particularly promoting critical thinking and real-world applications.
