Bowman High School was issued a higher Academic Performance Index score after the continuation high school's principal suspected an error in the original score.

Bowman's initial score in the fall was 598, a 27-point decrease from the previous year. Principal Robin Geissler believed the score to be wrong and soon found a discrepancy in the school's posted results from the California High School Exit Exam.

Geissler appealed the score to the California Department of Education.

The corrected test scores show an API score of 692, a 67-point jump from last year.

Geissler considers the increase a testament to what the students at the continuation high school can do.

"This amazing score proves that what you are doing in the classroom is making a profound difference in the lives of at-risk kids," she said in a statement. "Together, we are closing the achievement gap at Bowman, one student at a time."

A record 276 students graduated from the continuation high school in 2008. The school had an increase in the number of students who pass the exit exam, with 86 percent of seniors passing the English portion and 85 percent of seniors passing the math portion.

The school is moving forward in its efforts to close the achievement gap. Bowman's English language learners scored slightly above the school average on the writing section of the exit exam and students in special education achieved mean math scores slightly above the general population.

"At Bowman, we not only believe that every student can achieve at high levels of learning, we are demonstrating it," Geissler said.

"You have proven that closing the achievement gap can be done, it must be done, and we are doing it at Bowman."
