On Friday the 13th, Plum Canyon Elementary School was focusing on family and school rather than luck. More than 420 grandparents attended Plum Canyon PTA’s Grandparents Day, giving them their highest attendance ever.

Grandparents come from all over the U.S. and are invited on campus for a morning packed full of activities with their grandchildren.

They are served a light breakfast, including coffee donated by Starbucks, and invited to a prize drawing with lots of great prizes from local merchants such as CPK, Barnes & Noble, Vincenzo’s, and more.

Afterward, grandparents take turns visiting their grandchildren’s classrooms to do age-specific activities and finish it off by taking a memento picture with them.

Local photographer Art Balena offers this service every year and donates the proceeds back to the school — just another way the local community supports education.

We always love having our grandparents visit us; quite often they will purchase a membership to help support our school or even make a monetary donation.

But most of all, they are proud grandparents, as evidenced by this year’s latest offering: a Plum Canyon Grandparent T-shirt that many of them ordered.

It is one of our favorite days of the year.
