NEWHALL - A decorated Olympian and a racecar champion united Wednesday for a shooting session at the Oak Tree Gun Club in Newhall.

The club is the practice area for Kim Rhode, a five-time Olympic medalist in double-trap and skeet shooting.

She was joined Wednesday by Scott Dixon, a two-time IndyCar racing champion and 2008 Indianapolis 500 champion.

“We got to do a little bit of skeet shooting and we had a lot of fun out there,” Rhode said Wednesday.

Rhode won a gold medal for double trap shooting in her Olympic debut at the 1996 Games in Atlanta and followed that up with a bronze medal in Sydney in 2000 and gold in Athens in 2004.

Rhode has also won medals in skeet shooting, garnering a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 and a gold medal in London in 2012.

In doing so, she became the first American individual competitor to medal at five consecutive Olympic Games.

Dixon is not quite as seasoned, saying he just started shooting about eight months ago.

But he learned quickly with a seasoned veteran like Rhode around.

“I’ve learned more in five minutes than I did in the eight months,” he said.

Those lessons included basic form problems, such as looking out of his wrong eye.

“It was like me driving and instead of going forward I was going reverse,” he said.

The experience made both champions realize how similar their two sports can be, particularly in how participants in both have to pay attention to wind, light and weather conditions.

Both also said they enjoyed the experience of shooting and getting to know each other a little better.

“And I actually hit some (targets) so I’m really proud of that,” Dixon said.
