SANTA CLARITA - A preliminary hearing has been set for a Valencia registered sex offender accused of following and videotaping young girls at stores in the Santa Clarita Valley, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said.

Yale Joseph Yurman, 70, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court on Thursday and was ordered to return next week for a preliminary hearing on felony charges he annoyed a girl, the spokeswoman said.

During his hearing, scheduled for Sept. 27, prosecutors will present evidence in the case, and the defense can respond, after which the judge will decide if the case should go to trial.

Investigators with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Detective Bureau arrested Yurman on June 19 after investigating reports of a man following a young girl and videotaping her while she was walking around inside Target on Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia.

Detectives working with Target’s loss prevention personnel were able to identify the suspect as Yale Yurman, one of the more than 50 registered sex offenders living in the Santa Clarita Valley.

They subsequently served a search warrant on his house on the 23700 block of Hickory Court in Valencia.

Inside the residence they found what they said is evidence showing Yurman following young girls and videotaping them on several occasions at three locations in the Santa Clarita Valley: Target, Walmart and Real Life Church in Valencia.

They also found evidence of Yurman allegedly following girls on the Santa Monica pier, deputies reported.

Yurman was initially arrested on the strength of the Ramey Warrant whereby a police officer arrests someone after having a cause to believe the person may have caused a crime. It is a warrant issued prior to the court hearing against a particular defendant.

He was then charged on July 10 on suspicion of having annoyed a child, a felony, with bail set at $1 million.

The gray-haired 5-foot-9, 169-pound Yurman — who also uses the alias names Joseph Abendana, Dale Orin Pettit and Steve Simonian — remains in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

On the Meagan’s Law website where he is listed as a sex offender, Yurman’s prior criminal code offenses include: annoying or molesting a child under the age of 18; performing a lewd or lascivious act with a child under 14 by force or fear and oral copulation with a minor under 14 by force or fear.
