SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Four Southern California water agencies have sued a neighboring water company for allegedly extracting groundwater beyond its rights, and without paying for it.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports the complaint filed Thursday says for eight years the San Gabriel Valley Water Co. has extracted thousands of acre-feet more per year than its allowed under rules set decades ago.

The newspaper says water was allegedly taken from the Rialto-Colton Basin, where the draw-down may cause water users in the area to purchase more expensive water from other sources.

The plaintiffs are the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, the city of Colton, the city of Rialto and the Rialto-based West Valley Water District.

San Gabriel Valley Water's CEO Michael Whitehead tells the Tribune the company acted within its rights.
