SANTA CLARITA - A Canyon Country man has been sentenced to six years in state prison after pleading no contest to lewd conduct on a child earlier this week, according to officials.

Epifanio Nevarez, 58, entered the plea Wednesday in San Fernando Superior Court. He will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, according to Shiara Davila-Morales, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

The charges against Nevarez stem from inappropriate sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl, including sending sexually explicit messages to her via instant message.

The incidents took place at his home in Canyon Country, according to officials.

At the time of the crimes, Nevarez was a volunteer softball coach for the girl’s team at St. Didacus, a Catholic school in Sylmar, Davila-Morales said.

The 13-year-old victim was a student at that school, according to officials.

Nevarez was arrested and booked on the charges in early March, according to information from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
