Some preleague confidence for Saugus girls tennis

Saugus sophomore singles player Carlie Ozaki returns a shot on Tuesday at Saugus High School. Ozaki won her sets 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2.

It wasn’t even close — an 18-0 victory for the Saugus girls tennis team on Tuesday at Saugus High over the Alemany Warriors.

And though the gauntlet part of the schedule is ahead, four wins in a week to start the season is doing a world of confidence-building for a young Centurions team.

“They’ve experienced more success than what they’ve expected,” said first-year head coach Ken Jeffris. “They’re starting to believe in themselves. Winning will do that for you.”

Saugus’ youth highlighted the day on the singles side, and the veterans highlighted things for the doubles.

Sophomore Carlie Ozaki won 6-0, 6-1, and 6-2.

Freshman Megan Cho won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

“Both are spectacular players. Both are energetic,” Jeffris said.

The last three set wins on the singles side came from senior Diorella Dizon at 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

Senior co-captains Caren Rosen and Rachel Callas were perfect at 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

Behind them, sophomore Kinzie Hovey teamed with junior Maddie Goeres to win 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 and sophomores Hannah Miller and Gabi Montesinos won 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1.

Of all the success on Tuesday, Jeffris highlighted Montesinos’ performance.

“She was a first-year player last year who was called up to varsity this year, and she was scared to death about coming up to the varsity,” Jeffris said. “She’s improving every day, looking like a varsity player. Her progress has been far above my expectations. She looked really good today.”

It’s obvious that Saugus (4-0) has a lot of potential, but the Foothill League will be much tougher than what the Centurions have seen thus far.

Saugus finished fourth in the Foothill last season and earned a wild card berth to the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Jeffris believes this team will be in playoff contention this year as well.
