SANTA CLARITA - The Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on its school board, according to information posted on the district’s website.

The vacant seat belonged to Debbie Rocha, who decided to resign so she could devote more of her time to the nonprofit organization SRD~Straightening Reins, which she co-founded.

That organization uses equine-assisted learning and interactive therapies to help at-risk youth and their families, according to its website.

“I can make the most positive influence committing my time to these ventures,” she said of her nonprofit work. “It was the right thing to do at this point in my life.”

Those interested in applying for a seat on the five-member board must be at least 18 years old, registered to vote and live within the boundaries of the Acton-Agua Dulce district.

Applications must be received by Sept. 23, according to the district’s website. Sitting board members are scheduled to interview interested applicants on Sept. 26.

Anyone who is interested in applying can download an application online at www.aadusd.k12.ca.us.

Acton-Agua Dulce is the third local school board to go through an appointment process in the past year. The Board of Trustees for the Santa Clarita Community College District appointed Steve Zimmer to the board in January following the election of Scott Wilk to the state Assembly.

The William S. Hart Union High School District also went through an appointment process to fill the seat of Paul Strickland, who resigned in May to take a consulting job in Florida.

The Hart district may go through that process a second time after the board’s chosen appointee, Chris Fall, resigned in August due to a potential conflict of interest stemming from his consulting agreement with a company that deals with the district.

Members of the Hart district board are scheduled to discuss the process and timeline for filling that vacancy at their meeting Wednesday evening.

The scheduled November board election for the Acton-Agua Dulce district was recently canceled after no one filed to challenge the three incumbents up for re-election.
