Refferee Fred Tanner calls for the coin toss as former Canyon High head football coach Harry Welch, center, flanked by 1983 Canyon High CIF championship team captains Tony Moore, left, and Rick Burton, flips the coin at the Canyon High School football game on Saturday.

Three decades after the Canyon Cowboys won the school’s first CIF title, former head coach Harry Welch and members of the 1983 CIF Northwestern Conference championship team reunited on the Cowboys’ field Saturday at Canyon High School.

In a pregame ceremony at Canyon High’s Harry Welch Stadium, the Cowboys honored the championship squad, the second team to win a CIF title in the Santa Clarita Valley by mere hours — after Hart won the CIF Coastal Conference crown the day before.

Welch led Canyon to the title on Dec. 10, 1983, as his Cowboys defeated Bishop Montgomery 40-24.

“(Our team was) over-achievers who didn’t know they were overachieving,” Welch, who is now the head coach at Santa Margarita High School, said.

In front of a crowd of hundreds, Welch and 1983 stars, quarterback Rick Burton and offensive lineman and linebacker Tony Moore conducted the pregame coin toss before the 2013 Cowboys took the field against Clovis West.

“I love the people of the Santa Clarita Valley, and the people at Canyon were my family. Unlike Thomas Wolfe, who couldn’t go home again, I can go home again. And here I am.”

Canyon defeated Clovis West 48-0 after Saturday’s ceremony.
