Santa Clarita Christian was out for revenge against a Windward team that had beaten it each of the last two years.

On Friday night, the Cardinals kept things close for a half against their  former 8-man rivals, but Windward picked up the 22-6 victory to send SCCS to its second straight loss to start the season.

“Very, very physical,” said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss of Windward. “We played,  we had some big plays, but definitely didn’t execute offensively in a way that could have kept some drives going. We had some dropped passes and some penalties  —a couple crucial penalties.”

Running back Kamron Carroll led the effort for the Cardinals, leading the team with 110 yards on 13 carries and Derek Lewis added the sole touchdown for SCCS.

The Cardinals said before the season that their first two weeks against Chadwick and Windward would be a big test of where the Cardinals are at to start the season.

Now, Moss said, he knows there’s plenty to be done moving forward.

“Oh yeah, we’ve still got three more games and a bye week, so four weeks (before San Joaquin League play) which is huge,” he said. “We’re right there. We’re very, very, very close to winning both of those games.”
