“Libraries are community treasure chests, loaded with a wealth of information available to everyone equally, and the key to that treasure chest is the library card. I have found the most valuable thing in my wallet is my library card.” — Former First Lady Laura Bush

Former First Lady Laura Bush and educators across the country agree that the most important card in your wallet is your library card.

September is national library card sign-up month, and if you don’t already have one, I hope you’ll stop into your local branch or visit www.SantaClaritaLibrary.com to get yours today.

The Santa Clarita City Council is committed to programs that bring people together, enrich the mind and add value to the community — and the Santa Clarita Public Library is doing just that.

Nearly one year ago, I had the pleasure of opening the doors as thousands of residents enjoyed a first look at the community’s newest library in Old Town Newhall.

Since that day, more than 306,000 visits have been logged at that library. People have told us they enjoy the family-friendly activities and programming and community spaces for teens, groups, students, and parents.

Last week we shared the Santa Clarita Public Library’s 2012-2013 annual report detailing the many highlights of the last year, including the fact that our three branches saw attendance of 888,880 people, or the equivalent of everyone in the city visiting a branch four times.

We also issued another 28,099 new library cards, which are free.

I look forward to increasing that number this month as we celebrate national library card sign up month. To view the FY 2012-13 Annual Report, please visit www.santaclaritalibrary.com/annual-report/.

The Santa Clarita Public Library offers more than books. Each month the library offers workshops and classes for kids who are homeschooled, story times for children of all ages, homework help online and at each branch, teen advisory board meetings and game time, adult book club meetings, and free craft events, just to name a few.

The community is a big part of the Santa Clarita Public Library experience — after all, the library branches are yours.

We want to be sure the programming and activities reflect the residents served, so if you have ideas for future events or want to see something new or different at your local branch, please let us know.

Monthly Author Events

If you haven’t had the opportunity to join us for a special author event, I hope you’ll make plans to join us for the next on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Newhall branch.

Author Peggy Hesketh will share a behind-the-scenes look at her novel “Telling the Bees,” in addition to answering questions and signing books.

If you’d like to know more about the monthly author events, please sign up for updates on the city’s website under Santa Clarita 24/7 and click on the eNotify link and click the Santa Clarita Public Library box.

Join Us as the Newhall Library Turns 1

This month the Newhall Library celebrates its one-year anniversary, and we have a family friendly celebration planned for Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. It will feature a variety of free activities, including kid-friendly comedians and magicians, story times with local dignitaries, birthday crafts, free cake, and plenty of opportunities to read, relax, and connect with your community.

All events are free thanks to support from the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library.

Learning is a life-long process, and the Santa Clarita Public Library is a great place for you and your family to foster a love of learning.

If you haven’t visited your local library branch, I hope you’ll do so this month. And please join us for the birthday celebration on Sept. 28. I look forward to seeing you at the library soon.
