OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The city of Oxnard wants to buy a federal Superfund site that has become a magnet for crime.

The Ventura County Star says the city filed an application last week to buy the 11-acre Halaco site — although the issue still must go to the City Council.

The beachfront property once housed a metal recycling foundry. Authorities say vacant buildings there have attracted squatters, graffiti vandals, drug users and prostitutes. Hazardous material has been found in one corner.

Ventura County advertised the site for sale last month along with other properties in tax default. Members of the family that owned Halaco Engineering Co. owe more than $243,000 in property taxes.
