DUI checkpoints are a waste

Here we go again — “1,093 vehicles screened Friday night” (The Signal, Sept. 1).

So gas is wasted, people are inconvenienced, traffic jams happen, cops are highly paid for unproductive time, babysitters are kept too late. And for what — one DUI arrest!

I asked someone who should know why they don’t just station cops a block or two away from bars at closing time if they really want to catch intoxicated drivers.

I was told that would be “entrapment.” What nonsense. What hypocrisy.

No wonder people from other countries think Americans are crazy.
