Jersey Mike's celebrated its third anniversary at its Saugus sandwich store in March of 2011. At the time, an employee made a sandwich for Steven Manfro of Valencia, right.

Franchise owner Steve Youlios is opening his fifth Jersey Mike’s Subs today at The Plaza at Golden Valley shopping center.

In keeping with tradition of giving back to the local community — in particular local schools, Youlios is celebrating this grand opening by giving free subs Sept. 4 to Sept. 6 to everyone who makes a donation to support Golden Valley High School Performing Arts.

Since 2010, the sandwich shop chain nationally has raised almost $7 million for worthy local charities — and distributed more than 500,000 free sub sandwiches to numerous charitable organizations.

Started at the Jersey Shore in 1956, Jersey Mike’s continued its steady growth in 2012, opening 92 new restaurants throughout the country, a 33 percent increase in new store growth over 2011.

“For our grand opening we are excited to be supporting the Golden Valley High School Performing Arts Program,” said Amy Sandberg, director of marketing and catering for Jersey Mike’s Santa Clarita Valley locations.

In February 2008, Youlios opened his first Jersey Mike’s location in Saugus. He owns additional locations in Stevenson Ranch, Valencia, and Canyon Country.

With a sales background in radio broadcasting, Youlios worked with CBS radio for a very long time. He also worked with KFWB 980 news talk station in Los Angeles before leaving the industry to own his own business.

He bought his first franchise in 2008 after often visiting his daughter who worked at a Jersey Mike’s Subs in Valencia when she was in high school. His interest in joining the sandwich chain evolved over time, he said.

Also a member of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, Youlios was awarded Rookie of the Year by the chamber in 2011.

Although a relatively new member at the time, Youlios was credited with devoting more time in his short term of membership than many rookies had in a year.

What impressed him was seeing the dedication and concern that residents have a good community to live in, he said.

The Golden Valley High School marching band is planning to be on site for opening day today.

“At Jersey Mike’s, we are dedicated to serving the schools in our valley,” Sandberg said.

For those who want to support the Golden Valley High School Performing Arts, the newest Jersey Mike’s Subs sits between Kohl’s and target in the retail center located at 19159 Golden Valley Road.
