SANTA CLARITA - One of two people rushed to the hospital Saturday following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 14 near Newhall Avenue has died, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.

Alfonso Valdivia, 64, of North Hills died at 4:02 p.m. Saturday in Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital less an hour after the crash, Coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral said Tuesday.

Shortly before 3:15 p.m. Saturday, officials with the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of a traffic collision involving several vehicles in the southbound lanes of Highway 14 near Newhall Avenue.

One of those cars spun around and hit the center divider, coming to a rest facing the wrong way on the freeway, a CHP officer at the scene said.

When firefightters and CHP officers reached the scene, one occupant of the car, later identified as Valdivia, was reported unresponsive. He was given CPR and was transported to the hospital.

One other person was taken to the hospital, but the condition of that individual was unknown.
