SANTA CLARITA - The search for 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa switched into high gear Tuesday as divers scoured the waters of Castaic Lake, sheriff’s deputies on horseback circled it and helicopters searched the area from above, local sheriff’s deputies said.

Despite the combined and varied efforts by searchers throughout the day, the Northern California college student who had been on his way to his parents’ Orange County home remained missing.

Searchers Tuesday focused their efforts in and around the lake near which Laspisa’s SUV was found overturned on a paved access road that leads to the Castaic Lane main boat ramp. The vehicle was on its side at the bottom of a 15-foot ravine.

A previous search on Friday had focused on the shore around the lake. Tuesday’s efforts involved patrol deputies on the ground, members of the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue team, the sheriff’s search/scent K-9 dogs, the sheriff’s patrol helicopter and a special sheriff’s dive team from the LASD Special Enforcement Bureau-Emergency Services Detail.

The ground search focused on Government Cove near the main boat launch on the upper lake.

“We’re checking a very shallow area near the shoreline where the dogs had kind of picked up his scent,” said Deputy Paul Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau.

“What they’re doing today is a 10-foot dive,” Schrader said, describing the area as close to shore. “They can use lights under water and today they have an apparatus to let them do that.”

Bryce Laspisa is described as 5-foot-11, 170 pounds with red hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo of a Taurus bull head with a Roman numeral on his left shoulder. He was last seen wearing white cargo shorts, a blue-and-white checkered shirt and white-with-red Nike shoes.

Laspisa’s parents live in Laguna Niguel, and they reported he was heading home to visit when he disappeared. He last spoke to his mother on the telephone around at 2:08 a.m. Friday, reportedly from Castaic.
