Valencia DuPre of Santa Clarita joins a small group at the corner of The Old Road and Magic Mountain Parkway holding signs calling for immigration reform.

About 20 people rallied in Valencia Saturday afternoon to bring awareness to the issue of immigration reform and to try and get local Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, to change his stance on the issue.

The rally took place at the corner of Magic Mountain Parkway and The Old Road, with attendees waiving signs that read, “Honk for Immigration Reform” and “Drive by Democracy.”

“Even though it’s a hot day, I thought this was a good cause to come out and support,” said attendee Lowell Kebschull, a resident of Saugus.

People also came from outside the Santa Clarita Valley to attend the event, like Granada Hills resident Gloria Hendry.
“This country was formed by immigrants,” she said. “And it continues to be formed by immigrants.”

Reaction from cars driving by was largely positive. One young man was heard to shout “freedom” out the window of his car as it drove by.

Two other passersby, however, yelled “go Romney” at attendees in reference to former Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The event also featured a fictional interview with a man pretending to be former Republican President Ronald Reagan, using some of Reagan’s quotes in favor of immigration reform.

The event was put on by Organizing for Action, a group that advocates for the agenda of President Barack Obama, and was part of the group’s month of action around the nation, said Peter Rothenberg, the chapter lead volunteer for the group in McKeon’s district.

“I think we’re cutting off our nose to spite our face,” he said. “Immigrants want to contribute to our country, so let’s give them a chance to contribute.”
