Weitzeil fifth in 50 final at Worlds

Saugus junior Abbey Weitzeil proved herself among the world’s best junior swimmers this week, when she competed at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Weitzeil concluded her week by finishing fifth during Saturday’s 50-meter freestyle final with a time of 25.48 secondsm — .38 seconds behind champion Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.

On Friday, Weitzeil advanced to Saturday’s final with a qualifying time of 25.92 in prelims and 25.56 in the semifinals.

On Wednesday, Weitzeil also took part in a mixed 4x100 freestyle relay prelim race, where she helped the U.S. team advance to the final.

Weitzeil did not swim in the final of the 4x100, but the United States team of Cierra Runge, Kathryn McLaughlin, Alexandra Meyers and Mary Schneider went on to finish third in 3:43.04.
