California Statewide Fire Summary

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Nearly 9,300 firefighters continue to battle 10 active major wildfires burning across California. The Deer Fire, burning in Tehama County, and the American Fire, burning in Placer County, are both estimated to be fully contained later today. In Northern California temperatures are expected to begin warming back up and could hamper firefighter’s efforts. In Southern California the fire potential remains light to moderate thanks to isolated thunderstorms.

Firefighters on the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park continue to make good progress. The fire has now burned 192,737 acres, but firefighters have the blaze 30% contained. The Rim Fire is now the 6th largest wildfire in California’s recorded history. With a return to warmer temperatures, the estimated containment of the fire has been pushed back until September 20.

With the holiday weekend approaching, CAL FIRE is reminding all residents and visitors to be extra cautious outdoors. Conditions across the state remain extremely dry and even just one spark can quickly spread into a major wildfire. For more steps to prevent a wildfire visit
