California Highway Patrol officials are investigating the theft this week of multiple tactical weapons from a vehicle in Stevenson Ranch, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Wednesday.

Some of the weapons were recovered Tuesday in Los Angeles, CHP spokesman Saul Gomez said Wednesday. The weapons were taken by someone who broke into the vehicle, he said.

Gomez declined to provide details about the theft, including confirming or denying reports the vehicle from which the weapons were stolen was a CHP car. He would not identify the types and number of weapons stolen.

The theft Monday also included “additional equipment and personal items,” Gomez said.

According to KTLA Channel 5, highway patrol officers were conducting tactical training exercises in Stevenson Ranch when the theft occurred. The TV station identified the stolen weapons as two AR-15 semiautomatic rifles, two Remington shotguns and two Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handguns.

A bulletproof vest, handcuff keys and the officer’s identification were also stolen, the report indicated.

Gomez declined to identify the items recovered Tuesday near 120th Street and Central Avenue in Los Angeles, saying the investigation was ongoing.

“We are taking every measure to ensure the recovery of the weapons and identification of the suspects,” he said.
