For the second straight season, Hart begins the season ranked No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division.

Hart leads a group of four Foothill League teams ranked in the top 10 of the Northern Division, according to the official CIF preseason prep football division rankings released Monday.

Following Hart is defending Foothill champion Valencia at fourth place, Canyon and fifth place and West Ranch in 10th.

This marks West Ranch’s first appearance in the top 10 of the division since it was ranked eighth in the Oct. 10, 2011 poll. That season, West Ranch appeared in the top 10 rankings for five weeks.

Hart, which finished 8-4 last year and took third place in league, returns the majority of its key players on offense.

It spent a good portion of last season ranked at or near the top of the division. Hart, Canyon and Valencia were among the top 10 through the entirety of the 2012 season.

In this year’s preseason poll, Palmdale ranks below Hart at No. 2 and defending Northern Division champion Palos Verdes in third.

Valencia will travel face Palmdale to open its season on Sept. 6. No other ranked Northern Division team is scheduled to face a Foothill opponent this year.

Falling below Valencia and Canyon in the polls is West High of Torrance (sixth), Atascadero (seventh), St. Joseph of Santa Maria (eighth) and Arroyo Grande (ninth).

Elsewhere in the Southern Section, Santa Clarita Christian was tabbed as No. 10 in the Northeast Division poll.
