SANTA CLARITA - The city of Santa Clarita’s annual Concerts in the Park series wrapped up in spastic fashion Saturday as thousands of people danced and grooved to the music of The Spazmatics, a 1980s and new wave tribute band.

Members of the ample and active crowd, some of them wearing band T-shirts, jammed as the four members of the band, dressed in orange astronaut jumpsuits, pranced around the stage.

Valencia resident Brett Sternberg said he arrived at Central Park in Saugus hours before the show began to scope out a good spot.

“The diehards get here early,” he said.

Santa Clarita resident Mario Villanueva said this year was the first time he turned out for the concert series.

“My friends invited me out so I wanted to see what it was like,” he said. “It’s a great time and all the bands play really well.”

Mike Fleming, arts and events supervisor with the city of Santa Clarita, estimated that between 30,000 and 40,000 turned out for the free eight-concert series this year.

“We feel like there’s a cultural aspect to the whole series,” Fleming said. “We want to put on something that’s a little different.”

Fleming also said the city seeks to have a mixture of tribute bands and bands that make original music.

“The main thing is, regardless of the style of music, it will always be top-of-the-line,” he said.

That same sentiment was expressed by Santa Clarita resident Dave Brunsman.

“It’s a great way to get together and hang out with your friends,” he said of the concert series. “I’m really glad the city puts it on every year.”

“And you can’t beat the price,” Sternberg quipped.
