Canyon High varsity football didn’t scrimmage just anyone in preparation for their season opener with Westlake next week.

The Cowboys played defending Golden League champion and CIF-Southern Section Northern Division power Palmdale High on Friday Night at Canyon High School.

The game that started with both teams trading off on special teams plays and ended with four quarters of football that wasn’t scored.

Canyon got off to a slow start, surrendering a touchdown on Palmdale’s first possession — a touchdown reception by highly touted running back Demario Richard — and failing to move the ball on their first two offensive drives.

The Cowboys’ third drive started with more of the same with three false starts, but after overcoming a third-and-17, Canyon finished the drive with a Trevor Prata 1-yard touchdown run.

Both teams scored one more touchdown each and Canyon looked far better in the second quarter and late than the first period.

Canyon’s came on a 56-yard pass from Cade Apsay to Zach Cuha, while Palmdale’s came in the fourth quarter after Canyon head coach Rich Gutierrez took out his starting defense.

Apsay completed 12-of-22 passes for 201 yards, Cuha caught four passes for 88 yards and Canyon running back Myron McAfee carried 18 times for 65 yards

“Our guys were excited for tonight, we treated this like a regular game,” Gutierrez said.
Palmdale was equally excited.

“We want to schedule tough opponents, well-coached teams,” said Palmdale head coach Jeff Williams. “We know we have the possibility of playing them in the playoffs. I like playing teams like Canyon.”

Palmdale hosts Valencia in Lancaster on Sept. 6.

The Cowboys’ open at Westlake next Friday.
