SANTA CLARITA - A cyclist struck by a car more than a month ago remains under hospital care for serious spinal injuries, friends and others said this week.

David Rock, a man in his 50s who was bicycling on Sierra Highway in Canyon Country when he was hit by a car, suffers “some paralysis,” said a friend who contacted The Signal.

“David has serious injuries,” she said. “We just thank God that his spinal cord was not severed.”

Rock was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital July 15 with a broken back and numerous lacerations and abrasions, according to the California Highway Patrol investigator who responded to the crash.

Henry Mayo spokeswoman Katreena Salgado confirmed Rock had been a patient at the hospital until July 24.

He was transferred that day to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he began physical therapy as part his rehabilitation. A spokeswoman at Kaiser said she could not divulge any information regarding any patient at the hospital.

A friend of Rock’s, however, said the road to his recovery is proving to be a long one, noting, “nearly two months after the crash, he’s still in the hospital.”

Rock was bicycling about 6:30 a.m. on July 15 when he was hit by a car on Sierra Highway north of Vasquez Canyon Road.

The motorist left the scene of the crash, according to the CHP investigator.

Four hours after the crash, a Newhall man who lives on Walnut Street and works busing tables showed up at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and was charged with felony hit and run causing injury.

A California Highway Patrol officer said the man who turned himself in at the station was the driver of the vehicle that struck a bicyclist earlier that day.

Charged with felony hit and run causing injury is 29-year-old Artemio Hernandezreyes. He remains in custody on $50,000 bail.

Hernandezreyes is scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court Sept. 11 to set a date for his preliminary hearing, said Shiara Davila-Morales, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
