College of the Canyons wrapped up its 40th Annual Cross Country Summer Series on Thursday with its seventh and final race on the school’s Valencia campus.

The collection of three-mile races included a wide range of runners who came out once a week beginning in July 11.

“It’s just exciting that you get all kinds of competition,” said Lindie Kane, COC cross country and track and field head coach who also organized the event. “You get the top high school athletes and you get the person who might be wanting to lose a few pounds.”

The races drew anywhere from 400 to more than 700 participants week-by-week and it concluded with an awards ceremony to age group and overall winners on Thursday.

Each runner was charged $5 to enter the first six races and $15 to run the final, which also included dinner at the end.

The event serves as the primary fundraiser for COC’s cross country and track and field programs, said Kane, who has been head coach since 1995.

“I can remember thinking 60 people was a great night and we charged a dollar,” Kane recalls of the event in the 1990s.

Some of the top runners participating are current or former high school and college runners from the Santa Clarita Valley.

Saugus graduate Rodrigo Ornelas won the July 31 race and former The Master’s College runner Jeffrey Jackson won on Aug. 13.
