Half the school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley will not hold their regularly scheduled elections in November because few challengers filed to run, a county official said this week.

The Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District, Castaic Union School District and Santa Clarita Community College District will not hold elections in November, according to Regina Ip, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office.

They join the William S. Hart Union High School District in having incumbents re-seated without challenge.

Each of the districts had three of its five board members potentially facing re-election, but in each case only current board members declared a run for office. That leaves three school districts and a water district holding elections on Nov. 5 in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Elections are automatically called off if there are not enough candidates to hold a contest, Ip said.

“If there are the same number of candidates as there are seats, or if there are fewer candidates than there are seats, then the election will be canceled because there is no contest,” Ip said.

The Hart district will not only see incumbents returned to office without an election, but will also see an appointee seated because board member Chris Fall filed for re-election, then resigned due to a potential conflict of interest.

The Hart district board will decide at its Sept. 11 meeting how to proceed with Fall’s replacement.

Elections will be held Nov. 5 for the Newhall School District, Newhall County Water District, Saugus Union School District and Sulphur Springs School District.
