SANTA CLARITA - In a variation on the cat-stuck-in-a-tree story, Castaic firefighters rescued two baby raccoons from an apartment Dumpster today — and nobody even got scratched in the process.

Debra Cutter, who lives at the apartments in the 31600 block of Ridge Route Road, says her husband first spotted the critters in the trash this morning on his way to take the car in for servicing.

“They were in the bottom in a corner,” Debra Cutter said of the stranded baby raccoons. “They were so cute. A resident came by and put some trash in there, and my husband said, ‘We’re going to call the Fire Department.’”

For Castaic Fire Station Capt. David Inman, it was just another job — and not a very demanding one, at that.

“We put an attic ladder in the trash can, and they just went right up it,” he said of the raccoons. “That was it.”

The raccoons climbed down the back of the dumpster and fled.
