Firefighters from at last two Santa Clarita Valley Fire Stations were pressed into action Sunday to help fight a brush fire in the Lost Hills area north of Malibu, fire officials said.

Firefighters from fire stations in Valencia and Newhall joined counterparts from other areas in the county to help fight a fire described as problematic due to its hard-to-reach location.

“It’s a difficult brush fire because there are no roads to get to it,” said Fire Department Supervisor Kyle Sanford.

“The Santa Clarita units joined other units including those in West Hollywood and Hawthorne,” Sanford said.

At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire had burned more than 170 acres, 40 miles southwest of the Santa Clarita Valley and just south of Calabasas.

“The fire is 30 per cent contained,” Sanford said. “But, we have the fire’s forward progression stopped.”

A spokesman for local Fire Station No. 126 said “a few units” including those from Fire Station No. 73 were called on to help out.

Air support including water-dumping helicopters and, for a brief time, the Super Scoopers helped in the firefighting efforts Sunday.

The Super Scoopers arrived in Los Angeles late last week and were immediately pressed into action.

On Thursday, the two fixed-wing Super Scoopers - on lease from Quebec - were practicing at Castaic Lake.

The Super Scoopers which can scoop up 1,600 gallons of water in seconds, are stationed at Van Nuys Airport. They can do multiple drops with one load of water and can also drop retardant, a county Fire Department spokeswoman said.

To refill, the pilot skims the surface of a lake, reservoir or the ocean, and the plane’s refilling system sucks up a full tank’s worth in about 30 seconds.

The big yellow planes can be airborne in as little as five minutes and can stay in the sky for three hours before needing to refuel.
