More than 140 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol Friday as law enforcement agencies countywide ramped up their enforcement of such offenses ahead of Labor Day weekend.

Officers representing 100 law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County made 143 DUI arrests Friday.

That number is a decrease from last year, when 164 people were arrested during the same 24-hour period, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Ramped up DUI enforcement measures include checkpoints, where drivers are stopped and screened to see if they are under the influence.

“In addition, all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts,” read a news release.

The CHP Newhall Station is among those to step up its patrols Saturday to try to catch more drivers who were operating their vehicles while under the influence, according to a news release.

Additional efforts to catch those who may be driving under the influence will continue until Labor Day on Sept. 2, according to county law enforcement officials.
