Cougars women's soccer ranked No. 7 in preseason poll.

The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team has earned a little bit of respect from around the nation after back-to-back Western State Conference, South Division championships.

When the National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its Junior College Division III national preseason rankings this week, the Cougars sat at No. 7.

“It’s great to be recognized," said COC head coach Justin Lundin. "Last year we finished No. 6 in the nation and I think our early preseason poll ranking was a result of what we built with back-to-back championships. And last year, with the national ranking we’ve come to a place where they expect that from our program. It’s a good place to be.”

COC finished last season with an 18-1-4 record, but living up to their preseason ranking will mean a lot of new faces coming together quickly.

The Cougars return just four players in Hart grad Allie Leon, Saugus grad Stacey Atwater, West Ranch grad K.T. Koury and Samantah Kephart.

“We have a talented group,” Lundin said. “It’s coming together and taking more time to put it together just because we really have no base to start off with four returning players. We don’t have a platform. We’re building everything.”
