NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Eduardo Romero shot a final round 68 on the par-71 Newport Beach Country Club layout to win the Champions Tour Toshiba Classic here on Sunday.

The Argentine now turns his attention to the AT&T Champions Classic March 13-15 at Valencia Country Club, hoping to be the first player to win the two Southern California Champions Tour events in the same season.

Romero went into the final round in third position, trailing second round leaders Bernhard Langer and Mark O'Meara; however, it was Joey Sindelar that caught everyone's attention over the final 18 holes. Sindelar fashioned an 8-under 63 to vault from the 24th position to start the day to the top of the leaderboard. Romero recorded three straight birdies to start the back nine and added another on the par-5 15th to get a two-shot lead. He bogeyed the par-5 18th to finish with a 54-hole total of 202, one shot ahead of Sindelar and O'Meara.

AT&T Champions Classic defending Champion Denis Watson finished in a group of five players tied for fourth place, three shots back at 205. Joining Watson were Tim Simpson, David Eger, Tom Jenkins and Fred Funk.

Langer shot a final round 73 to drop into a tie for ninth place.

Coming off a stellar year in 2008, the win in Newport Beach was Romero's fifth on the Champions Tour. Last season, he captured the U.S. Senior Open, the Dick's Sporting Goods Open and the SAS Championship en route to a fourth-place finish in the Charles Schwab Cup points championship. Playing a limited schedule in 2006, he won the JELD-WEN Tradition. Romero has competed in the last two AT&T Champions Classic events at Valencia CC, finishing T17 and T20, in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Tournament round tickets, starting as low as $15, are on sale now at www.championsclassictickets.com or by calling 661-254-3303. AT&T is offering free admission for the tournament practice rounds on Monday and Tuesday, March 9 and 10, and the pro-am rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, March 11 and 12.

NOTE: Jim Colbert won the 1996 Toshiba Classic and finished second in what was then called the Ralph's Senior Classic at Wilshire Country Club, and Jose Maria Canizares won the 2001 Toshiba Classic and finished second in the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club.
