Cellphones should be used only in safe environments

A front-page picture in one of the newspapers Friday was most disturbing.

The picture shows a young woman crossing in a pedestrian zone while talking on the cellphone, oblivious to what was going on in her surroundings.

Granted, in this day and age cellphones are a "necessary evil."

But there seems to be a death wish when cellphoners are only concentrating on that cellphone conversation instead of paying attention to a hazardous and risky situation while walking in a pedestrian zone.

Under the best of circumstances, you can’t be too careful when you are participating in any kind of traffic situation while driving or walking and you are zoned into the cellphone, being unaware of your surroundings. "Awareness" is the key word, and one has to be aware at all times.

Idle chat is the most usual conversation on the cellphone, and that is all well and good, but it must be done in a safe environment.

What is chilling is to see is a mommy pushing a stroller in a cross walk with young ones trailing behind, and she is on the cellphone.

Using your hand-held cellphone in the car is a violation of the law.

Why isn’t it a violation when using a cellphone in a cross walk or a pedestrian zone?

Deaths have increased in the past few years from cellphones being used in pedestrian zones.
