Fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom and quickly spread to the upper level of a house on Essex Place in Valencia on Monday, but no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, a Los Angeles County Fire Department official said.

A couple and three young children live at the residence, said Battalion Chief Dennis Cross.

Residents on the tiny cul-de-sac near Clearidge Drive said they saw smoke and flames coming from a second-story bedroom about 3 p.m.

“Firefighters carried out a search and rescue and, thank goodness, no one was home,” Cross said. “The fire then spread to the adjacent bedroom, the hallway and attic,”

“The bedroom was just full of flames,” said 8-year-old Charlie La Vine, who lives near the house.

La Vine said he ran to the front of the house just as firefighters were arriving.

“You saw the flames through the attic,” he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. No damage estimate was immediately available.
