One person was taken to the hospital and four pets were killed Friday when a Newhall home caught fire.

Two dogs and two cats died as a result of the blaze in the 24900 block of Alderbrook Drive, said Battalion Chief Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Inspector Keith Mora said the fire was reported at 3:40 p.m.

A female occupant discovered flames and smoke in the garage and escaped the home with her son, Savage said.
The fire later extended into the living area of the home and the attic, he said.

One person was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, Los Angeles County fire spokeswoman Cheryl Sims said. Officials did not identify the victim or say if it was one of the two who escaped the home.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Sims said. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Next-door neighbor Frank Talamantes rushed back to his home from his construction job after he was alerted to the fire.

His wife and two children fled the house through the back alley as he soaked down his roof with a garden hose to prevent any embers from his neighbor’s home from igniting his own, Talamantes said.
