Breach of ethics

To William Bratton: I was watching the news recently and saw an ad that really caught my attention. I saw you endorsing the current L.A. mayor for re-election.

I am a retired peace officer from a small L.A. county agency. I currently teach criminal law and criminal investigations at a community college.

I am a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute. I have been a supervisor and manager responsible for the hiring of police officers.

I don't know you personally, nor have I ever worked with you or for you.

I believe that your endorsement for the mayoral election violates the (possibly written or unwritten) ethical policies (peace officers are to remain publicly apolitical) that belong with being a peace officer in the U.S., or at least in this state.

I find it hard to believe you would commit this breach of ethics, when I am sure you would punish one of your subordinates for doing the same.

The emotional side of me feels shame for you having done this.

The citizen side of me believes you should be investigated by the District Attorney's Office and the Police Commission.

I have sent this e-mail to them as well as local news agencies, to bolster the probability that someone will question this beyond me.

I welcome a reply from you.
