Mr. McKeon: I write this as I finish reading the article in this morning's Signal ("Dems chide McKeon," Feb. 26) about your opposition to the Obama stimulus package.

I have been a resident of Santa Clarita for 18 years and have always tried my best to support local businesses, many of which are now disappearing.

It is almost comical how you and your Republican colleagues are now acting in a fiscally conservative manner after rubber-stamping the reckless spending of the Bush administration, helping to create the problem we now have (and don't get me started about the cost of the unnecessary occupation of Iraq ... the cost in dollars and lives).

Believe it or not, I am not a Democrat. I am a registered Independent which means I root for the country, not the team.

I am also quite sick of Republicans crying about the Obama administration after only one month, not working in a bipartisan manner.

I have already seen Obama reach out to his opponents more than I saw Bush do during his entire eight years. We have tried the Republican "way" and the results are obvious.

The article in the Signal quoted resident Marcia Lewis, saying that "it's not cool to oppose the stimulus bill" and "I'm OK with not being cool."

I am quite certain that the huge number of people losing jobs and homes and facing unbelievable hardships are not supporting Obama and his plan because "it's cool."

Marcia Lewis is obviously not facing any of these problems. Nor are my wife and I - not yet. But it sure would be nice to feel a bit more comfortable about our future. Remember, Mr. McKeon, you work for all of us.

Please get off your GOP high horse and do the right thing for once.
