BANNING, Calif. (AP) — Officials say residents and deputies who were stuck without an escape route at a huge Southern California wildfire have safely evacuated.

Both ends of a highway were blocked by the wildfire earlier Wednesday night, forcing some residents and deputies helping them leave to take shelter in place.

But state fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann says all were eventually able to evacuate safely. She did not have any further details.

Another rural neighborhood was put under evacuation orders late Wednesday night as the nearly 8-square-mile fire in Riverside County near Banning continued to rage.

Three people have been injured and homes have burned, but it wasn't clear how many.
