Valencia High junior volleyball player Kyle Ensing played for a USA High Performance team that won the gold bracket of a tournament against top-level international youth squads last week.

The competition took place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and ended on July 28.

Ensing’s team, labeled USA Select A1 Red, finished 7-1 overall in the tournament comprised of 14 teams from New Zealand, Puerto Rico and around the U.S.

In the gold championship game, Ensing started at outside hitter and helped his team defeat USA Youth A1 White 3-2 by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15.

A1 Red had to made a dramatic comeback in the fifth and deciding game after trailing 14-9 early and finishing on an 8-1 run.

Most of the teams in the tournament were made up of players ranging from 17-18 years old, while Ensing’s team had all 15 and 16-year-olds.

Ensing, who was a Signal All-Santa Clarita Valley first-teamer, was one of 55 players around the country selected for the A1 teams. High Performance teams are used by USA Volleyball as feeders to eventual USA national teams and Olympic teams.
