Sean Tucker will participate in the 2013 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship sprint event on Aug. 11 in Milwaukee.

The 17-year-old Valencia High student was invited to the event after his noteworthy finish at the Carpinteria Triathlon last September.

Tucker was 18th among 455 racers in the event and he was second in the boys 15-17 age group.

If he finishes in the top 25 of his age group in the Milwaukee race, he’ll be placed on the U.S. team that will compete at the 2014 International Triathlon Union World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

“It’s one of my aspirations,” Tucker said. “I think making the team would be really, really cool.”

Tucker started out exclusively as a swimmer, but expanded that to triathlons when he was 13. He’s competed in five to six sprint triathlons every year since then.

Standard sprint distances include a 750-meter swim, a 20 kilometer bike ride and a 5k run.

Some day, Tucker said he’ll compete in Olympic-distance triathlons, which are one-mile swims, 40k bike rides and 10k runs.

Tucker swims for the locally-based Canyons Aquatic Club and is a varsity swimmer at Valencia, where he’ll be a senior this fall. He said he also plans to join the school’s cross country team this season.
