Several local swimmers are set to compete at the 2013 Speedo Junior National Championships this week in Irvine.

To kick off the, Hart senior-to-be Matt Johnson raced in the 1,500-meter freestyle and Valencia incoming freshman Nikol Popov competed in the 800-meter free on Monday.

Johnson finished 60th with a time of 16 minutes, 8.91 seconds and Popov was 92nd in the 800 in 9:13.13.

The event continues today and runs through Friday.

Later this week, Johnson will also take part in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle races as well as the 4x100 relay.

Both swimmers are with the local Canyons Aquatic Club.
