Michele Buttelman: Looking for my lost hour of sleep

SCV Scene

It seems that the fans of daylight-saving time have prevailed over those of us who rather like standard time. I'm rather tired of changing my clocks forward and back all the time. Can't we just choose one time and stick with it? I hope everyone remembered to set their clocks back an hour and have arrived to where they need to be this morning on time.

Kicking off the charity walking season
'Tis the season for charity walks. I attended two exciting kickoffs Thursday, one for the Arthritis Walk to be held May 3 at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Relay for Life to be held May 30-31 at Central Park in Saugus.

Also upcoming is the Footsteps 5K Run/Walk (April 19 at Newhall Park) to benefit Operation School Bell for Assistance League of Santa Clarita Valley and the Walk for Hope 5K and car show (April 18 at Castaic Lake) to benefit Circle of Hope breast cancer support group.

Seen at Arthritis Walk kickoff
The annual Santa Clarita Valley Arthritis Walk held at Bridgeport Park will be combined with an Arthritis Walk held in Warner Center in the San Fernando Valley and both walks will now be held at Magic Mountain.

I think Jay Thomas (president of Six Flags Magic Mountain) is one of my heroes. He seems to be everywhere supporting so many important SCV nonprofits and institutions. Also spotted in the throng, John and Joni Shaffery, Travis Shaffery, Myles McNamara, Don and Cheri Fleming, Kerry Carmody, Carl Goldman, Linda and Steve Lamborne and Kris Hough.

Visit Final Score in Newhall
Joe Comella
of Final Score in Newhall called me last week to lament the poor economy and to protest a rumor that's gone around the Santa Clarita Valley that his restaurant had closed. Comella said Final Score, 23254 Lyons Ave., in Newhall (661) 254-6557, is still open and serving the best and freshest sub sandwiches and more. Final Score has been an SCV instituion for 30 years and needs a helping hand, so pop over and buy a sandwich from Joe. FYI, their malts are out of this world.

Deadline for Zonta Community Grants
In these difficult economic times, Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley Foundation is offering nonprofit organizations a chance to receive much-needed funding. Organizations that improve the status of women of any age are encouraged to apply for a possible $3,000 grant.

The deadline is March 14. Any 501(c)(3) non-profit that has not yet received an application or needs further information, should call (661) 252-9351. Grant applications will be evaluated by Zonta's Community Grants Committee chaired by Diane Goddard and including members Christine Miller, JoAnn Rodriguez, Karla Edwards, Cindie Bassett and Marsha McLean. Grant checks will be awarded at the Zonta business meeting on Wednesday, May 13.

Seen at Valencia Wine Co.
The McGrath Project was rockin' the house on Wednesday evening at Valencia Wine Co. It was great fun to hang out with Valencia Wine Co. owner Guy LeLarge and friends John Dow and Margie and Ron Clark. The music was awesome, too!
