A police pursuit of a carjacking suspect began on Highway 14 near Agua Dulce shortly before noon Wednesday and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour before the driver was halted in North Hills in the San Fernando Valley.

About 11::45 a.m. Wednesday, CHP officers monitoring southbound traffic on the 14 freeway just south of Escondido Canyon Road spotted a 1998 Toyota Avalon traveling at a high rate of speed, said CHP John Lutz.

“The Avalon initially and momentarily yielded near Vasquez Canyon (Road),” Lutz wrote in a news release.

“As the officer began his approach on the vehicle, CHP dispatch revealed the Avalon was stolen out of the Palmdale area July 23 out of a carjacking,” according to the release.

“The Avalon immediately sped away from the shoulder southbound on Highway 14, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph in and out of traffic,” the news release said. The driver of the vehicle was “driving erratically and without due regard for the safety of the motoring public,” it said.

CHP officers followed the Avalon onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 to Interstate 405, then to Highway 118, according to the release.

The car traveled into Simi Valley before returning to the San Fernando Valley, where it was halted on the 118 freeway at Woodley Avenue, said CHP Sgt. Kevin Pack, who participated in the pursuit.

“This pursuit involved three CHP stations and two divisions,” Pack said, adding no one was injured in the chase.
CHP officers used the PIT maneuver to terminated the pursuit.

The PIT maneuver is a tactic used by law enforcement to stop a vehicle by causing it to turn sideways and forcing the driver to lose control and stop. Typically, a pursuing patrol car makes just enough contact with the rear of the fleeing vehicle to make it stop, Pack said.

Christian G. Cabanillas, 20, of an unknown address, was arrested and charged with felony evading and vehicle theft.
He was taken into custody without further incident.

Sheriff’s deputies from Santa Clarita, Palmdale and Lancaster. as well as CHP investigators, were cooperating in an ongoing investigation.
