Firefighters mop up after a fire charred less than one-half of an acre of brush off the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic on Tuesday.

Firefighters from two agencies jumped on a small brush fire in Castaic Tuesday after it flared up in two places, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Fire Department officials received reports of a fire near the southbound lanes of the interstate north of Lake Hughes Road, said Inspector Anthony Akins.

“Point four acres were burned,” he said, referring to an area just less than half an acre of “light” grass.

“ANF (Angeles National Forest) guys were coming down hill and we were going uphill,” Akins said. “We had two small spots on the west side of the freeway, right next to the freeway.”

In less than an hour, firefighters had extinguished the fire, he said.
