How about the wild weather we’ve had in the last week in the Santa Clarita Valley? From my mid-West friends I’ve been told that the thunderstorms and high humidity reminds them of home. I guess we’re lucky that most of the time we just have hot weather without the humidity.

Merry Graham update

The SCV’s top home chef has just returned home from four weeks of travel. She reports that one of her adventures included baking her light and fluffy chia rolls at the National Festival of Breads in Manhattan, Kan.

"I did not win but it was a very fun festival," she said. "They took us all out to the wheat fields and we rode on a huge combine while harvesting. We toured the processing plant of King Arthur Flour, too."

Graham also reports that she did not win the $1,500 prize, as one of the three finalists in her region for the National Beef Federation. "They have not announced the grand prize winner who will receive $25,000," she said.

Graham is one of 10 winners who will head to the Duncan Hines. test kitchens in New Jersey Sept. 19-21 for a big party. "Sounds like a fun trip," she said. "We take a cooking class there."

In addition, Graham will head to the NYC Food and Wine Festival in October for her win in the Cookmore (Kenmore) contest. She won that prize a few months ago.

Miss SCV

Miss SCV Kelsie Leach has been busy during the early part of her reign. She has appeared in the SCV Fourth of July parade and recently met with Assemblyman Scott Wilk.

"I had the honor of meeting with our state Assemblyman Scott Wilk," said Leach. "He was very gracious allowing me to visit his office and take a photo. He was very interested in learning about the Miss SCV program.
