Alexis Clewis to play for Gonzaga

West Ranch outside hitter Alexis Clewis verbally committed to Gonzaga University last week.

The words were like music to her ears.

“Are you ready to be a Zag?” asked an assistant Gonzaga University volleyball coach.

West Ranch’s Alexis Clewis had just been offered a spot on the team starting in 2014.

“What? No way,” she remembers thinking. “And I was really excited and I did the whole thing where my eyes got wide and I was like, ‘Oh man, this is happening.”

Clewis, who will be a senior this fall, accepted the offer on the spot on July 16. It was then that she was approached by Gonzaga coaches during a camp held at the school in Spokane, Wash.

It was Clewis’ second visit to the campus in the past five months. Her first visit in March was enough to convince her it was the right fit.

“The main thing is the coaches,” Clewis said of the team. “They are amazing. And then I really like the girls on the team.”

The West Ranch outside hitter was also in talks with San Francisco State, but she said Gonzaga was her first choice.

In her second year as a West Ranch varsity player this past season, Clewis led her team with 220 kills and was a Foothill League first-team selection. She was one of the league’s top outside hitters, and figures to be once again as a senior.

Clewis joins a host of SCV volleyball products who have gone on to play at the NCAA Division I level. From the class of 2013 alone, Valencia graduates Delaney Knudsen (Pepperdine) and Sierra Sanchez (Florida State) moved on to Division I beach volleyball teams, while West Ranch graduate Tanner Skabelund (BYU) and Hart graduate Nolyn Preston (Cal State Northridge) will play traditional indoor volleyball for their college teams.

Gonzaga competes in the West Coast Conference. Last year, the team finished 9-20 overall and 1-15 in the WCC.
