From March 9-15, the city of Santa Clarita will once again play host to the AT&T Champions Classic Golf tournament. Some of the biggest names in golf, including Gary Player, Jay Haas, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Purtzer, Tom Wargo and Loren Roberts will compete for more than $1.5 million as part of the annual event at Valencia Country Club.

Santa Clarita has been home to the tournament since 2001, and over the years the community has come together to support the event. This respected tournament not only attracts some of the best names in golf and more than 20,000 spectators, but also contributes more than $7 million in economic benefit to Santa Clarita and its businesses and more than $18 million regionally.

In addition, the tournament is broadcast on the Golf Channel and garners regional, national and international exposure for the community through television and print media coverage.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to AT&T for its commitment and service to the community through the years as title sponsor of the AT&T Champions Classic.

We have truly been fortunate to have a community partner in AT&T. Not only has this tournament infused valuable dollars through economic stimulus, it has brought unrivaled attention to our great city, positioning Santa Clarita as an ideal place to live, work and play.

In addition, AT&T has given back to community organizations and charities year after year, providing valuable funding for nonprofits and their programming and services.

Now, if you have never been out to the AT&T Champions Classic, believe me when I say this is truly a unique event. Unlike some golf tournaments, the Champions Tour is all about the fans.

It’s about getting fans up close and personal with the pros, putting them inside the ropes and allowing them to shake hands, pose for pictures and share conversations with some of the greatest names in golf. Professional athletes have never been so accessible and we are so fortunate to have an event like this right here in our community.

One way the Champions Classic gets fans close to the professionals is through the Pro-Am and Junior Pro-Am tournaments, which pairs community members, business leaders and golf fans with their favorite professional for 18 holes. It is really one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for golf fans.

Best of all, admission to watch the Pro-Am and Junior Pro-Am is completely free. So make plans to come out to the course Monday through Thursday and enjoy some great golf, food and an unmatched setting.

Individual tickets are $15 each and ticket packages are still available for the tournament and are available through the Boys & Girls Club of the Santa Clarita Valley at www.ChampionsClassicTickets.com or by calling (661) 254-3303.

You may also purchase tickets the day of the event at the gate. Event parking is available at College of the Canyons.
