Construction begins today on the Newhall roundabout to be located at Main Street, Newhall Avenue and Fifth Street, city officials said, urging residents to plan trips around the area while work is being done.

The intersection will be closed effective July 29, with traffic rerouted to Railroad and Lyons avenues, officials said. Signs will be posted to direct drivers away from the area.

“The project will not only serve as a southern gateway into Old Town Newhall, but also reduce vehicle emissions and improve community mobility and aesthetics,” Mayor Bob Kellar said.

City officials will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the roundabout on Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the site.

Meantime, they are considering the selection of a work of art for the center of the roundabout. The selection process is down to two choices: a giant film spiral portraying a cowboy, or a stylized reconstruction of a native Tataviam Indian lodge with cast glass between stainless steel bands.
