Los Angeles – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the southbound I-5 connector to southbound Glendale Freeway (SR-2) on Saturday, July 20 from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. to continue efforts to repair damaged caused by the tanker fire on Saturday, July 13. Detours will be posted. Closures are subject to change.

Caltrans has taken core samples of the damaged concrete from the tunnel. Caltrans Materials Engineering and Testing Services Lab will use the samples to determine the extent of damage and determine a permanent repair solution.

The intense heat from the tanker fire caused extensive damage to the pavement, walls, support structures, drainage, and lighting within the northbound SR-2/northbound I-5 connector tunnel, requiring it to be closed for several weeks or months.
