Where’s the consistency?

Regarding Mr. McKeon’s Sunday column (“Stimulus or spending?” published Feb. 15): With all due respect (isn’t that what they say in Washington?), I never saw a column objecting to the spending of our grandchildren’s money from Mr. McKeon when George Bush took an economy that was a healthy surplus and gave tax cuts to the most wealthy in the country.

I didn’t see a column from Mr. McKeon objecting to the spending of our grandchildren’s money when we were spending more than a trillion on a war that was never put in the budget, and while we helped bail out the banking industry in September. My question is: “What has changed so drastically that the Republicans wouldn’t support the helping of the American middle class?”

Oh, I forgot. We have a Democratic President now and we now have a party that is the party of obstruction.

The people in Washington couldn’t say no to a President that went on an eight-year spending spree and got us into the mess we are in and now they decide that this is bad for the country? Isn’t that a little like closing the gate after letting the horse out of the barn?

By the way, it is a little dishonest to say the budget includes the $650 million in coupons for digital-to-analog converter boxes when that happened on the Republican watch as well. Let’s be truthful about this budget, sir.

My question to the American people is: “Why do we continue to send these same people to Washington over and over again?”

Also, why is the Republican party — the party of anything goes — building up more than a trillion dollars in useless spending and fiddling while Rome burns?

Makes no sense to me.
